The notes a reader writes in the margins of a book — reactions, arguments, questions, a sudden memory. The place where reading stops being passive and becomes a conversation.
More broadly: anything written at the edge of something else. The aside. The whispered addition. The thought that arrived while reading and refused to stay quiet.
A short history of reading with a pencil
For as long as books have existed, readers have written back to them. Medieval monks annotated scripture in the margins — corrections, cross-references, and the occasional drawing of a rabbit. Renaissance scholars filled the white space of Aristotle with their own arguments. In 18th-century London, a well-annotated copy of a book sold for more than a clean one, because the notes were considered part of the text.
The word "marginalia" was popularized by Edgar Allan Poe, who published a series of short literary fragments under that title in the 1840s — observations too brief to be essays, too considered to be notes. He described marginalia as the thinking that happens "in a moment of excitement" — thoughts that would never be written down in a formal work but which were, for that reason, more honest.
Poe understood something: the margin is where you tell the truth. In the middle of the page, you perform. In the margin, you respond.

The margin is where readers become writers
There is a theory of reading — held, in different ways, by Proust, by Roland Barthes, by every devoted reader you have ever met — that says a text is not complete until it is read. That the book on the shelf is a potential; the book being read is a thing alive. The reader is not a passive receiver but a co-creator, bringing their whole life to the page and leaving some of it there.
Marginalia is what happens when that co-creation becomes visible. It is the evidence that reading happened, and that it mattered enough to answer. Every underline is an agreement. Every question mark is a challenge. Every exclamation in the margin is someone, alone in a room, so affected by something they had to write it down.
We built this platform on that belief — that reading and writing are not two activities separated by a gap of talent or courage, but two ends of the same gesture. The Indian writer has always known this. In a tradition where texts were responded to by other texts, where the commentary is as revered as the original, where a story told aloud expects an audience that talks back: the margin has always been part of the page.
An Indian tradition
Sanskrit commentary tradition — the bhashya — is one of the oldest and richest marginalia traditions in the world. Commentators like Adi Shankaracharya did not merely explain texts; they argued with them, extended them, reframed them entirely. The Mahabharata grew, over centuries, by accretion — each retelling adding to the margin of the last.
In the regional traditions — Kannada, Tamil, Bengali, Urdu, Hindi — the literary conversation never stopped. Poets wrote in response to other poets. Novelists began where their predecessors ended. Stories traveled across languages, gaining new inflections at every crossing.
That conversation is still happening. It is happening right now, in WhatsApp messages, in comment threads on Twitter, in the notes app at 1am, in the stories people write because they read something that needed answering. We built a place for it.
